The Town The Sun Forgot
The people of the small town of Scio, Oregon – population 929 – saw the news coverage talking about how campsites were selling out state-wide, how Air-BNB has had record bookings in Oregon and on and on. For all intents and purposes, it sounded like the Solar Eclipse was a pretty big deal. And the city of Scio, Oregon was in a prime location for viewing.
The people of Scio began assessing what they had to offer. Scio is in the Path of Totality. Scio is secluded enough to avoid the madness and congestion much of the rest of the state is going to see yet still close enough to I-5 for easy access. And th city and community had the ability to provide plenty of family entertainment & camping options. The people of Scio decided to have a celebration to mark this once in a lifetime event. Property owners and the City of Scio banded together to create an event that would welcome people from all over the country into their community.
With all the excitement the news media was generating the community has spent more on the preparation for this event than they might have otherwise. Extra law enforcement has been brought in, solar eclipse glasses pre-ordered, porta pots ordered in large quantities to address the record size crowd the city & property owners would be hosting, the high school is opening its doors to visitors for showering, Eastman Farms brought in live music… Scio is primed and ready for one of the largest celebrations they’ve ever had!
Well, the problem is early reservations for camping are nearly non-existent. Many in the community are nervously watching as the sales that should have been pouring in continue to trickle at a rate that is disappointing in regards to their hopes for a successful event. This once in a lifetime event that had so much promise with so much media hype, has turned to the sobering reality that they may lose money… a lot of money.
If you and your family & friends are looking for a great place to enjoy the Solar Eclipse… Scio, Oregon just might be that place. Events include: live music, camping & RV spaces, hiking, disc golf and much more.
